    The Walk into the Future blog is designed to highlight my thoughts and adventures.  There are days when I have more to say than others but I’m always searching for new content to keep me engaged with this writing process.

    My friend Lauren and I discussed creating a blog post to highlight how running is a metaphor for life. 26.2 is life—catchy, huh? 😊 Well, here’s my run at comparing running to Walking into the Future (living life).

    Marathon training is a detailed and long process.  I normally put myself through an 18-week training program, so the marathon is the last step in this process.  I must mentally and physically prepare myself for the grind and I’ve found that I enjoy the training.  The grind is real: 4:30 am alarms, 8:30 pm bedtimes, short runs, long runs and physical therapy.  I’m always searching for small wins during the training cycle and celebrating them as much as possible. 

    You don’t have to be an avid runner like me or Lauren to understand marathon training.  We all run some type of marathon daily, but you may call it by another name: Life.  Marathon training is a perfect metaphor for life as the lessons overlap and there’s growth throughout the process. Let’s explore!

    Most folks think of the starting line when discussing a marathon.  The starting line is never the hardest part, it’s getting there.  I find the starting line to be the most enjoyable part of the marathon.  The work put in just to make it to the starting line is something that most runners are proud of.  The excitement for the event is high, and you’re surrounded by fresh possibilities for the race outcome.  Daily life works in a similar way.  New jobs, new goals, and new relationships always feel motivating at first.  The ultimate tests come later when the excitement fades, and the work starts to become routine.  This is when you must dig deep to ensure you are moving forward with daily activities.  Discipline is extremely important in marathon training and life. Discipline carries you further than motivation will.

    Marathon training plans come in many different formats.  I picked the 18-week version because it provides enough flexibility to fit into my schedule.  There are weeks when I feel strong and unstoppable and then there are weeks when my legs are concrete.  This is a normal part of the ebb and flow of marathon training.  Daily life can resemble this same cycle.  We all have good and bad weeks, but progress is never measured in a straight line.  You just need to keep showing up daily to make the most out of life.

    Dr. Henry Cloud’s book 9 Things You Simply Must Do to Succeed in Love and Life has a chapter titled Work Like an Ant.  This chapter highlights how small things can lead to large things.  The ants move one grain of sand at a time to build their home.  Marathon runners find race day success because of consistent choices throughout the training cycle.  Drinking water, getting consistent sleep, easy runs, tempo runs, long runs and recovery are all things needed for running success.  Mile after mile is leveraged to build an effective base that leads to marathon success.  Daily life can resemble this process.  Small things lead to big things—planning, managing your time and setting goals can help you win in life.

    I make it a point to never compare my training program to others.  My goal is to run my own race, so I never get caught up in how other runners prepare.  I toe the marathon starting line looking to run my best race and not trying to beat someone else’s time.  This helps me enjoy the training and marathon process.  Life can mirror this process.  Comparing yourself to others is a fast way to lose joy in things.  Everyone has something they are trying to overcome so don’t get caught up in worrying about others—we all have a race (life) to run.

    The marathon is a test of will, mental toughness and physical ability.  Each component is critical to preparing and completing a marathon.  Mile 23 is always the toughest for me as I battle mentally to keep pressing forward.  Training for a marathon is one thing but the work during a marathon makes you question life choices. 😊  This is where I need to dig deep and keep putting one foot in front of the other.  There are Mile 23 moments in life too.  We all face challenges that stretch us and force us to choose what we want to get out of life.  These moments help us grow, teach resilience and prove what we are truly capable of. 

    I don’t remember every mile in my training program, but I can tell you how I felt each time I crossed a marathon finish line.  This moment of accomplishment stays with me forever and I love telling people that I am a marathoner.  Finishing a difficult chapter in life, overcoming a challenge or reaching a long-term goal can bring the same level of accomplishment.  The finish line is something to celebrate not because of the big victory but because the journey was hard.

    Regardless of whether you run or not, we all have days filled with obstacles, discipline, growth opportunities and grit.  We tackle these challenges, fight through mental and physical fatigues, celebrate small wins and continue to move forward through hard times.  That’s the same energy that gets me through the marathon.  Call it marathon energy!  Keep moving forward and training for the life you want to live.  We’re all stronger than we think and can-do hard things.  Marathon or life—they both require you to put in the work to be successful.

    The Walk into the Future blog allows me to cover a wide range of topics to include my travel and running pursuits.  These are two things I love and will continue to chronicle for my readers and myself.  Laying down these tracks provides me with a sense of satisfaction and completion weekly.  Stay tuned for more content in 2026! 😊

    My friend, Cathy, and I were discussing writing prompts and books last week.  We got on this discussion because I gifted her a copy of my book and we discussed some of the topics I wrote about including taking my own advice.  I need to give my book another run because I dropped some wisdom on those pages. 😊

    We got on the topic of my favorite author and book:  Henry Cloud’s, 9 Things You Simply Must Do to Succeed in Love and Life.  I discovered the author and this book in a master’s level Career Development course while studying at Liberty University.  I never thought a college textbook would have such a profound impact on my educational, professional and life journey.  This book opened my eyes and set me on a life path that I still embrace daily.

    Why was this book so impactful?  Great question, Maria! 😊

    The book is a page turner from start to finish with insight that is easy to understand and put into daily life.  The author discusses the concept of DÉJÀ VU People but really explains that successful people regardless of profession display similar traits.  You may think you recognize someone who crosses your path, but you are really seeing traits that led multiple people to successful outcomes.

    The Nine Things Hidden in Plain Sight are:

    • Dig it Up
    • Pull the Tooth
    • Play the Movie
    • Do Something
    • Act Like an Ant
    • Hate Well
    • Don’t Play Fair
    • Be Humble
    • Upset the Right People

    Let’s explore Principle 3: Play the Movie.

    This principle is like every action has a reaction.  I love how the author highlights how each decision we make in life leads to new outcomes.  Your actions have future implications, and this chapter is written to remind readers of this simple fact.  Playing the movie for me comes into play each time I enter a full marathon training cycle.  Skipping a training run is a simple action when isolated but that one missed run can impact my entire training program for the week.  Skip too many training runs and my training cycle and marathon may be ruined.  Playing the movie allows me to see the consequences of my actions.

    You can add the same concept to your daily work activities.  Preparing before your big work meeting allows you to provide better feedback to your colleagues.  Ignoring the preparation process and your lackluster interactions could set you and your colleagues back.  That scene in your movie impacted the next few scenes.  Sounds simple, huh?

    I remind myself to play the movie in every decision I make daily.  What outcomes do I want from my decision?  What are the next scenes in the movie I want to play?

    Dr. Cloud introduces the Nine Principles in an easy format, and I walk around with his book daily.  It’s highly worn but it still provides me with wisdom daily.

  • 2025 Atlantic City Marathon training

    The 2025 Atlantic City Marathon will be my fourth full marathon.  I got this distance in my system with the 2022 Palm Beaches Marathon and continue to look to improve my training and finish time.

    The 2025 Chicago Marathon was my first run at a World Major Marathon, and I loved the race atmosphere so much that I instantly wanted to give it another run.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get accepted this year but will try to get in again in 2026.  I quickly pivoted to find another October full marathon and decided to give the 2025 Atlantic City Marathon a run.

    The race is described as the third oldest continuing marathon in the United States.  The race is much smaller than the 54,000+ runners in Chicago with about 1,000 finishers in 2024.  The distance is still the same and I expect a lot of crowd support on the Atlantic City boardwalk.

    An added feature for this year is my friend Lauren will come over from Philly and run the marathon.  We ran the 2022 Atlantic City Rock N Roll Half marathon together and this will be the first race we are back on the same course.  It should be fun! 😊

    I leveraged the Hal Higdon marathon training plan for my previous full marathons and see no reason to find a new training plan.  I set my marathon personal record (PR) in Chicago and took 25 minutes off my previous best.  I attribute this to better mental and physical preparation and not missing training sessions.  I also changed my mental approach to running by focusing on positive outcomes when running (example: less than 3 miles left instead of 3 more miles).  This seems like a very small thing, but it helped me change my focus and improved my mental approach when running. 

    I’m happy to report that I hit every training session goal so far during this cycle.  I’ve included three sessions in the gym to complement my running program.  Yoga, chiropractic adjustments and massage help me keep up my running routine too.  My bedtime during this cycle has been consistent at 8:30 pm or earlier.  This was one area I needed to improve, and I have been very consistent to include Friday nights so I can get up early for my Saturday morning long runs.

    I include my gym cardio miles in these numbers but have hit every running mileage point outlined in the training program so far.  I also added some extra running miles just in case I experience bad weather and can’t get out as much as I need to.  I’ve been lucky so far and have not missed a session due to the rain.  Not sure how long this luck will last but I’m putting in the necessary road work to run fast in October. 

    I want to get in the 4:45 (four hours, 45 minutes) range and know my training program and mental approach will be key to running faster. 

    I will provide a few more training updates as we get closer to showtime in Atlantic City.  This program has been fun so far and I’m going to put in the work to ensure I see results.

  • Five Minute Thursday: Favorite Comedian

    Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to give the Five-Minute Thursday writing prompt another run! 😊

    I created this topic with designs to write about Ali Siddiq who is an amazing storyteller and keeps audiences engaged.  This prompt came to me because I drove up to Daytona Beach last weekend to see Ali at The Peabody for his new tour, In the Shadows.  I started writing this article with the intention of telling my readers how great Ali Siddiq is but decided to take a slight detour to truly highlight the GOAT (Greatest of All Time).

    This Five-Minute Thursday prompt is: My Favorite Comedian.

    Surprise, it’s not Ali Siddiq but Dave Chappelle.  I have been a fan of Dave’s comedy for a while now with my full introduction to his work via The Chappelle Show.  This show only ran for two seasons but the amount of work he put into this show makes every episode a classic.  The level of comedic timing and clever skits made him a household name.  The show was must see TV and never disappointed the viewers. 

    There were a few skits that you really had to pay attention to keep up.  One of these skits was:  The Blind Black White Supremist.  Yes, the skit was just as ridiculous as the title, but he made a point and kept the audience laughing.  Check it out when you get a chance. 😊

    Dave ventures into True Hollywood Stories featuring Charlie Murphy to tell stories about legends, Prince and Rick James.  These are identified as completely true stories as told by Charlie Murphy.  I still watch these clips on YouTube when I want to laugh out loud.

    Dave Chappelle is a true stand-up legend.  His Netflix comedy specials are some of the most watched.  I believe I have seen them all and continue to watch clips on YouTube—his work never gets old to me.  I jump on YouTube when I need a laugh before going to bed and I always search for something from the Chappelle archives.  He just completed his fourth hosting stint on Saturday Night Live.  I’ve watched them multiple times and he continues to bring the funny.

    I highly recommend you jump on YouTube and check out some of his work.  You pick what looks good to you, but The Blind Black White Supremist is worth a shot if you want to laugh at a concept this silly.  The Prince skit is hilarious too. 😊  Challenge him!

  • Five Minute Thursday: Favorite Artist

    The Walk into the Future blog is back to give a run to the Five-Minute Thursday writing prompt.

    This writing prompt allows me additional flexibility to my writing program.  It provides a level of freedom where I can branch off and leverage a word or concept and then put a good five minutes to make a valid point or something others would want to read.  So here we go with another five-minute prompt.

    My fourth prompt for Five Minute Thursday is:  Favorite Artist.

    The Dick Clarke quote above is simple but is prophetic for me and my favorite artist.

    One word:  Prince!

    I’ve said multiple times that Prince wrote and sang the soundtrack of my life.  Maybe not in my adulthood but my teenage years and twenties resonated with every song that Prince put out.

    Most folks think Purple Rain was the best music Prince put out, but my soundtrack started a lot earlier than this musical masterpiece.  Dirty Mind (1980) and Controversy (1981) were my introduction to the Minneapolis sound and the genius of Prince.  I was fully engaged with his music when he dropped 1999 (1982) on the world.  I was hooked and remember my high school friends and I sharing the album—we would take turns bringing the album home and listening to the rock/funk/r&B sounds coming out of Minneapolis.  It was hard to believe that one man could play every instrument, sing every vocal note to include backup and produce at the level he did.  He introduced the band, The Revolution on the cover of 1999 but he was a one-man band up to this point.  I remember watching Prince on MTV for the Little Red Corvette video—he was very dynamic, musical and had all the dance moves.  The video enhanced his mystic and let us know he was a different kind of dude.

    I was into the music and the sounds of Prince then he dropped the Purple Rain soundtrack and movie in 1984.  It vaulted him into superstardom and then the world discovered my favorite artist.  I was already on the band wagon, so it was funny hearing other folks talk about Prince like he was a brand-new artist—he was not.  He had been building the soundtrack of my young life prior to ‘exploding’ onto the music/movie scene with Purple Rain. 

    My first concert was the Purple Rain tour.  My friend Anthony Simon and I got tickets to see Prince in the Leon County Civic Center in Tallahassee, Florida.  Convinced my mom to take us and dropped us off so we could experience Prince live.  This was one of my favorite moments from my childhood because the live music was even better than listening to an album.  He performed all our favorite songs, and we sang along just like we were part of The Revolution.

    I saw Prince live 5 times before he passed away in 2016—still a sad day for me but I’m still enjoying the music and reliving my youth every time I crank up the music.

    I visited Paisley Park back in 2018 to walk the same halls as Prince and experience the place he made music later in his life.  This is still one of my favorite Walk into the Future adventures.

    I introduced my niece Jayla to the 1999 album earlier this year.  She started collecting vinyl and I found a local store specializing in classic vinyl.  Jayla’s favorite artist is Michael Jackson but still wanted her to experience the grand sounds of Prince.  She’s listening to the soundtrack of my youth, and I know she is enjoying it!   Go Jayla! 😊

  • Student Success Karaoke

    How many times have you heard this phrase?  Do you agree or disagree?

    Well, my Walk into the Future journey provides a perfect dichotomy to both sides of this concept. I continue to seek adventures that allow me to maximize my personal time when I’m not trying to change the world one tree branch at a time.

    My work as Associate Vice President of Advising and Career Services allows me to impact a lot of people in positive ways.  There are days where I’m not the most popular person in the building based on decisions I must make as part of my daily duties.  This is a part of the business and makes my work interesting.  No two days are the same.

    I leverage my Organizational Psychology knowledge to build a team environment and culture to help the team thrive daily.  We have built in team building activities with cohorts to help our communication and ability to get positive results for our clients.  We started using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to enhance our internal communications and build on our goal towards positivity within the workplace.  The process to improve culture is an ongoing project and one I put a lot of effort into for continuous improvements.

    We started hosting a large Student Success activity during Halloween week back in 2021.  That year we put on an 80’s Dance Battle between one of my friends and myself.  It started as a simple joke, but the staff heard us talking and decided seeing older guys battle dance at work would be fun.  We turned this event into a full fledged 80’s party where staff dress in 80’s gear and we played music from the decade.  Fast forward and this was successful and we entertained colleagues from around campus.  Never saw so many smiles, people laughing and having fun at work. 

    Student Success decided to run this idea back for 2022.  We graduated to the 90’s with Music Bingo and a modified dance battle.  The intent was to engage folks in a different manner and still have music in the process.  We drafted dance teams and then had them battle in front of their colleagues to pick a winning team.  Our President got involved and handed out prizes to the winning team—we didn’t know he was going to do this.  Again, we created and hosted another fun and successful event that got the campus vibing and enjoying time with colleagues.

    My VP texted me over the 2022 Thanksgiving break with an idea for the 2023 fun activity.  Yes, we started planning the next event a full year in advance. 😊

    Her concept was to host a karaoke event and encourage staff to dress as their favorite artist.  This sounded good to me but did not fully process how this would work format wise, but we had a full year to bounce ideas and put the program together.

    Turns out Student Success Karaoke has been our most creative, ambitious, and entertaining event so far!  Did not realize how many folks enjoy karaoke and the ability to dress up at work.  We added a few wrinkles to the format where participants had to dress as their favorite artist and had to sing a song by that artist. 

    We had performances by Prince, Luke Combs, Steppenwolf, Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, Sia, Lil Nas X, Radiohead, Salt n Peppa, Gwen Stefani and Run DMC to name a few.  Everyone was dressed appropriately and had fun while entertaining the crowd.  This was my first-time singing Karaoke, and I was completely sober—no alcohol in sight! LOL. We had folks from every office on-campus in attendance and they all signed up to sing.  Some even hit the stage multiple times to show us how talented they were.

    We had three local food trucks pull up outside our building and provided folks with multiple lunch options in between our song sets. 

    Another successful event for the Student Success team!  This process may seem simple, but it goes a long way towards building the team dynamics that will allow us to grow and thrive together.

    Yes, folks are already asking us what we have planned for next year.  No idea at this point but it will be epic—I promise! 😊

  • 2022 Palm Beaches Marathon

    Prince famously sang in his hit song, Let’s Go Crazy, “Electric word life, it means forever and that’s a mighty long time”.

    Well, I’m here to share that I will forever have the moniker of marathoner!  😊

    According to Trackshack.com, only half of one percent of the population has run a marathon.

    I did not make this rate go up much but happy to join the folks who have toed the line and completed a full marathon.

    I have documented my goal to complete a marathon in 2022 and provided updates on my training progress since July.  I selected an 18-week training program to prepare me for the journey.  The training plan was precise on when to run and how far to run to build a base to start and complete a marathon—mission accomplished.

    Thanks to my friends and family for the encouragement during the training—it meant a lot to get positive shout outs while I was on this journey.

    Made my way down to West Palm Beach the day prior to the marathon to get acclimated to the area and attend the Gardens of Life Palm Beaches Marathon EXPO.  I was expecting this to be a large venue like the Rock N Roll events, but it was much smaller than I imagined and completely outside.  The EXPO was a series of tents in front of the Meyers Amphitheater close to the water.  There were only a handful of vendors at the EXPO so not much to browse or purchase.  Check-in was simple considering the size of the venue.  Got my race bib, t-shirt, goody bag and headed across the street to get food.

    Made my way to the ER Bradley’s Saloon which had a funky vibe, great atmosphere and was still serving brunch when I arrived.  The World Cup was playing on all the TVs and they had a DJ spinning tunes in the middle of the afternoon.  Seems like a great place to hang out when I’m back in West Palm Beach.

    Headed back to the hotel to get off my feet, rest and mentally prepare for what was coming in the morning.  Got to bed early since I needed to be up around 4:30 am to prepare and make it to the start line for the 6 am race time.

    Leveraged my hotel proximity to the start line and used the 1-mile distance as part of my warmup before the race.  Yes, I used this distance to run/walk my way to the race start—wanted my legs to be warm for the race.

    This race did not have corrals so found a nice spot in the middle of the other runners and waited for the race to start.  We got delayed for 10 minutes which had a few folks upset since they were ready to challenge themselves and the course.  We never heard why we got delayed but the horn went off and runners surged towards the start/finish line.

    I decided the day before to keep my pace as even as possible and focused on mile splits within the 10:30 – 10:50 range.  This would allow me to gauge my fitness and mental capacity over the first half of the race to determine what I had left in the tank.

    The first few miles went by, and I realized I had a big smile on my face.  This was because the months of training, early mornings and sacrifice was being played out in a real marathon.  Looking back, I was smiling at this point because we started around 6 am and the sun was still not out—didn’t realize it at the time but the coolness of the morning was going to go away very soon.

    Fast forward and I kept the 10:30 – 10:50 pace range through the first 16 miles of the race.  I crossed the half marathon (13.1 mile) point at 2:26:32 which may have been too fast, but I felt good.  This is where my lack of marathon experience showed.  I was able to maintain my run form and kept moving forward with this pace.

    The sun came out in full force at the 16-mile mark, and I noticed my pace start to slow.  At first it was a gradual slow down then the pace slowed more.  I felt great mentally, took water/Gatorade and gels at every station.  A lot of folks talk about hitting a wall in the marathon, but I won’t completely say that’s what I did.  I never thought about quitting just was upset with myself because my legs did not respond when I wanted them to.

    Decided at this point that I didn’t care what the clock said I was finishing this race.

    Amazing thing that happens during marathons is you get to see other folks experiencing the same mental struggle, pain, and doubts.  We even talked to each other as an impromptu support group to keep moving forward.  Even funnier is when you see another runner talking to their legs to keep them going, I didn’t do this because I didn’t think it would work.  LOL.

    The last 10 miles of the race was just me putting one foot in front of the other and showing the most grit I’ve ever displayed in my life.  I set a goal to complete a full marathon and I got it done.  Can’t say it was slower than I imagined because it’s the fastest marathon of my life (yes, the first one too) so I’m proud of the effort to make it from start to finish.

    Official clock time was 5:48:28 (five hours, forty-eight minutes, and twenty-eight seconds).

    I’m going to bask in this accomplishment, take some time off from running and sleep in for a few weeks.  My Walk into the Future has a busy 2023 race calendar so will enjoy some downtime before cranking up the training.

    The first Walk into the Future blog article was introduced to the world on May 21, 2018.

    Yep, four straight years of creating blog content and sharing it every week (mostly) with anyone willing to read about my thoughts, adventures, travel, and leadership pursuits.

    Looking back my writing style has changed and grown over the past four years as I seek to find content that others may want to read.  Scratch that thought—I am writing content based on my life and sharing with anyone who wants to read it. 

    I never had a clear idea where this blog would take me but decided to just sit down on my laptop and create content to publish.  I did not set out on a particular direction for my articles but felt an urge to write and the blog concept seemed like a natural place to showcase my words.

    I would be lying by saying I knew four years ago I would still be writing and sharing content through this platform.  A bigger lie would have been I knew I would attract an audience of people who never met me and read my articles weekly.  My friends and family are ALMOST obligated to read this stuff so knew ya’ll would be along for the journey! 😊

    I quick THANK YOU to my day 1 folks and everyone who follow this blog and my journey.

    I did a summary blog article awhile back to highlight Walk into the Future blog stats.  Decided to do that again for this article to showcase the continued growth for the blog and the impact it has in the world.  I am amazed daily when I get a new blog follower from another country.  This puts a huge smile on my face because I never thought starting a blog in Tallahassee, Florida would generate international interest.

    Martin Lawrence once joked that Michael Jackson was BANGING in Bucharest.  Well, I get weekly blog views in Romania so I can joke I am banging in Bucharest too—not as big as Michael Jackson but happy someone over there likes my work.

    I will continue to produce content for the blog as long as it is still fun to me and people want to read my work.  Let’s see how long we can continue to Walk into the Future!

    What topics do you want me to write about in the future?  No pun intended!
